FUTURE-INTENSIVE PROJECTS SHAPING KOCHI REFINERY

Kochi Refinery was commissioned in 1966 with crude oil processing capacity of 2.5 Million Metric Tons per Annum (MMTPA). Through progressive revamps and addition of process units, the refining capacity has been augmented to present level of 15.5 MMTPA.

The significant projects through which the Refinery has grown to the present level are the following:

  • Capacity enhancement from 2.5 MMTPA to 3.3 MMTPA in 1973
  • Capacity enhancement from 3.3 MMTPA to 4.5 MMTPA in 1984 with the addition of Fluidized catalytic cracking unit (FCCU)
  • Capacity expansion from 4.5 MMTPA to 7.5 MMTPA in 1994
  • Aromatic production facilities to make Benzene and Toluene in 1989
  • A 2 MMTPA Diesel Hydro Desulphurization (DHDS) plant in 2000 to reduce the sulphur content in Diesel
  • Capacity Expansion cum Modernisation Project to enhance refining capacity to 9.5 MMTPA and upgrade auto fuels to BS III/ IV standards, progressively commissioned during 2009-2011.
  • Integrated Refinery Expansion Project (IREP) to enhance refining capacity to 15.5 MMTPA and quality upgradation of auto fuels to BS IV/ VI standards in 2017.

A few of the unique features of recently executed IREP are the following:

  • Hydrogen Generation Unit on Build Own Operate (BOO) basis
  • Asia’s largest single mounded LPG storage facility
  • State of the art crude distillation and secondary processing units
  • Reverse Osmosis based De-Mineralised water (RO-DM) plant

As a testimony to its project execution competency, BPCL KR bagged the prestigious CIDC Viswakarma Award in two categories viz; 'Best Construction Project' and ‘Green Project Award’ during 2017.

ONGOING PROJECTS

  • BPCL is setting up a specialty petrochemicals plant at Kochi Refinery to produce Acrylic Acid, Oxo Alcohols and Acrylates, based upon 250KTPA of Propylene produced in the Refinery. The estimated capital cost of the project is Rs. 5246 Crores. The mechanical completion of the project has been achieved and commissioning activities are in progress.
  • BPCL-Kochi Refinery is implementing BS-VI MS Block Project to upgrade surplus Naphtha produced in the Refinery to Motor Spirit meeting BS-VI specifications. Mechanical completion of the project is scheduled during first quarter of 2020-21. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.3289 Crores.
  • BPCL is also investing Rs 11130 Crores for setting up another specialty petrochemicals plant producing Polyols at Kochi Refinery. The raw material for the project is 250 KTPA of Propylene which can be produced in the Refinery and project is proposed to complete during 2023-24.
