Natural gas is the preferred fuel in the domestic and industrial sector for various purposes, as it is an efficient and environment-friendly fuel. In order to reach out to customers even if they do not have an access to natural gas pipelines, Bharat Petroleum started the LNG by truck initiativewith the commissioning of a pilot project at General Motors, Halol.

Initially Bharat Petroleum partnered with INOX and carmaker General Motors India Ltd (GMI) to develop LNG facilityat the Halol car manufacturing plant using cryogenic storage and distribution solutions. A robust LNG distribution, storage and regasification system was developed and tools such as Hazop and QRA were employed to formulate Emergency Management Plan and Standard Operating Procedures. After GMI, many more customers have been contracted.

LNG is loaded on LNG trucksfrom PLL’s LNG terminal Facility at Dahej Port and transported to customers. At the customer premises, a state-of-the-art automated facility for storage and re-gasification has been developed for use of RLNG for various industrial applications.

The BPCL LNG Gas by Truck initiative will enable customers to reduce carbon footprint and reinforce the commitment of Bharat Petroleum towards a cleaner tomorrow. LNG is not only an economic fuel but also provides the customers with energy security in terms of dedicated supply infrastructure for transportation, storage and regasification of LNG.



With air emission requirements becoming more stringent for sea going vessels, one of the possible solutions for compliance with the stricter emission standards is the use of LNG as a propulsion fuel for shipping.

It is estimated that by the year 2020, there will be 1000 LNG fuelled vessels calling at various ports across the globe. A study done on the potential of LNG as bunkering fuel shows demand for LNG will be to the tune of 4-7 MMT per annum by 2020.

While some of the ports in the European countries seek to promote the use of LNG as a marine fuel and are pressing ahead with preparations to receive LNG fuelled ships, the infrastructure to provide LNG as bunker fuel is in the nascent stages of development in the terminal facilities in Asia.

Bharat Petroleum took up the initiatives to bring the bunkering of LNG to Indian shores and once again created history at Kochi. A new vessel MV KVITBJORN which had called on the Kochi Port on her maiden voyage to Europe for taking bunker fuel has been successfully fuelled by Bharat Petroleum using the LNG loading facilities of PLL.

As per information available, there are 50 more such ships under construction at various ship yards in China and all these ships are meant for delivery to their owners in Europe.
