A healthy population is a great asset for the nation, and BPCL is earnestly committed to the cause of community health through innovative and deeply effective interventions. Our primary focus is to serve the needs of underprivileged sections of the society, so that the benefits of modern healthcare trickle down to the bottom of the pyramid. This yeoman endeavor transcends gender, racial, geographic and economic barriers and unites all people as one in our quest to achieve higher goals in personal and public health. As health is intrinsically connected with hygiene and environment, our efforts also encompass these aspects holistically.
BPCL under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities supports “Hospital on a train” or “Lifeline Express” which has operation theatres equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. The project aims to reduce the burden of avoidable disability in communities in rural India through screening, early identification, medical and surgical intervention along with Information Education Communication programmes on various topics. The Lifeline Express have reached in the areas of Manmad (Maharashtra), Daltonganj (Jharkhand), Latur (Maharashtra), Churaibari (Tripura), Araria (Bihar), Dhubri (Assam) and Papum Pare (Arunachal Pradesh). Each of the location, more than 10,000 people have benefitted and have availed free healthcare services. These services include corrective orthopedic surgeries for people afflicted with polio or club-foot deformities, hearing impairment, cataract surgeries, performing plastic surgeries for cleft lips. In addition, the doctors on board provide breast & cervical cancer screening, epilepsy treatment, dental treatment, Gynecological and Cancer procedures. In addition stroke prevention programmes are also conducted through health education.
“Healthcare on Wheels” or “Mobile Medical Units” are equipped with medical equipment and provides primary healthcare services at the doorstep of the weak and disadvantaged population of rural/ urban poor parts of the country. The project also emphasizes on awareness programme for the community through IEC (Information, Education & Communication) materials related to healthcare and diseases in the regional language. BPCL through its CSR initiatives is supporting Mobile Medical Units in various states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Union Territory of Jammu. Each MMU has screened more than 20,000-25,000 patients annually and provided them with free medicines for primary healthcare.
BPCL has supported a project that focuses on improving the maternal & child health and also aims at reducing high risk pregnancy, increasing institutional deliveries with better facilities of the tribal community in HD Kote, Karnataka. This project has directly benefitted around 9000 tribal people and indirectly reached out to around 2 lakh people during the span of the project.
BPCL has partnered with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) in supporting the poor & needy disabled persons and bringing them into main stream of society by providing requisite appliances free of cost after due needs assessment. The project was carried out in Murshidabad (West Bengal), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Mewat (Haryana) to name a few. The assistive device includes hearing aid, Braille cane, artificial limbs, motorized tricycles, crutches, wheelchairs, etc. About 500-900 persons with disabilities benefited in each these project locations and were provided with requisite aids/ appliances.
A large population belonging to economically weaker section of the society are still not able to avail medical services despite being diagnosed for cataract surgeries. BPCL through its implementing agencies conducts end-to-end cataract care services for patients who were identified during eye-screening camps. One of such successful project was conducted in Thane & Palghar Districts of Maharashtra and more than 3400 patients were treated free of cost which includes intervention for Pre & Post surgeries, medicines, aids/ appliances, food & accommodation during the surgery period, etc.
Early detection of cancer care can help improved treatment for many different types of cancer. Due to various factors involved one such as poor financial support, fear of social stigma or even lack of information people are not forthcoming in approaching for treatment at early stage. BPCL is supporting one such project in Faridabad (Haryana) which emphasizes on providing primary healthcare services to general public, cancer screening & awareness programme and palliative care for terminally cancer patients. A team which includes a doctor, nurse and counsellor visits twice a week to terminally ill patient to provide services such medical care, psycho-social counselling, etc. Annually 10000 persons availed primary healthcare services of which 960 persons have been screened for cancer.
BPCL has been financially supporting more than 450 underprivileged and patients belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families for undergo treatment at 6 hospitals viz. Cancer Institute (Adyar- Chennai), Christian Medical College (Vellore- Tamil Nadu), Kailash Cancer Hospital (Vadodara-Gujarat), Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital Res. Centre (Bengaluru- Karnataka), Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai-Maharashtra) and Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute (Delhi). The project covers the holistic treatment cost of every patient such as surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, medicines, investigation/ test charges, prosthesis & growth hormone (if necessary) and as well as bone marrow treatment (if necessary).
Children suffering from Congenital Heart Defect are likely to develop learning difficulties and deformities in their life span. Most of the cases can be corrected in early stage, however due to economic constraint many families cannot afford to provide immediate treatment. BPCL has undertaken one such project covering 18 districts of Maharashtra where preliminary screening was conducted by District surgeons of its respective Districts and the suspected cases which are referred to empaneled agencies for further medical investigations. 50 children suffering from Congenital Heart Defect ailments were supported for advance medical care which included free surgeries.
A strong health infrastructure builds capacity and prepares the medical centre for accurate diagnostic and helps toward preventive and curative care. BPCL has supported various medical institutes/ organizations in strengthening healthcare facilities and continues to provide essential medical equipment as well as towards building infrastructure. The projects include equipment for ophthalmic care, linear accelerator for cancer care, MRI Scanner, tomography machine, CT scan machine, medical kits for ASHA workers, construction of additional facilities at hospitals, renovation of medical wards, etc.
BPCL-Kochi Refinery has an ongoing project for children in 156 Government Aided Schools in the areas of Refinery and costal Kochi covering nearly 36000 children. This project focuses on providing nutritious breakfast to all students early in the morning in order to sharpen their intellectual capabilities, improve their physical health and encourage enhanced enrolment. Majority of the students in the schools come from socially and economically backward families. Due to financial hardships students used to arrive in school without having breakfast. Thus this affected the health of children and it was observed that they lacked focus in studies. The project has been specifically effective in ensuring better attendance, improvement in academic performance and extra- curricular activities and inculcating good eating habits.
BPCL also undertakes a project for care & support of HIV/AIDs affected persons in seven districts of Kerala viz. Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulum and Kollam. Through its CSR programme, Kochi refinery is supporting around 5000 HIV affected people by providing nutrition, medical interventions as well as educational support for their children.
