A pioneering approach

The Budge Budge Installation which is spread in 39 acres came into existence in early 1900s and was the first Oil Installation in India, which was established by Burmah-Oil Company (BOC),1954. It has been the source of petroleum products in East India and has seen the petroleum industry from its early days

India’s first-ever drive-in service station was built in Mumbai, in 1932. Owned by M/s. JB Patel & Co, the kerbside pump at Lamington Road, South Mumbai, was the oldest Bharat Petroleum Fuel Station, with dispensing unit. Jehangir Bapooji Patel, a senior member of the partnership firm, was a very popular and well-known figure locally and was very proud of the fact that he made the first footprint in Indian fuel retailing.

This fuel station was later strategically relocated to Charni Road East, near Opera House in South Mumbai.

In December 1955, Burshane, a trade name for LPG, emerged in Bombay (now Mumbai). LPG, which was first imported by Burmah Shell and later sourced from its Mumbai refinery, was introduced for the first time in India, when the LPG was made available to the public. Burshane marked the shift in kitchens from traditional fuels to a cleaner and more efficient energy solution.

Within months of its launch, Burshane was also made available in many towns of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Years later Burshane transformed into Bharatgas - a brand responsible for spreading cheers and good health to millions of household.

Mumbai Refinery forms the roots from where Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited spread its branches. From a small refinery of 2 MMTPA capacity to its current 14.5 MMTPA, it not only satisfies the diverse needs of its customers, but has evolved to be the first of India’s modern refineries, symbolizing the country’s industrial strength and leveraging the latest innovations and technologies to enable digital transformation.

Spread over 454 acres of land at Mahul, the Mumbai Refinery was ready one year ahead of schedule! Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India, declared the refinery open, in the presence of Shri Morarji Desai, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, in May 1955.

Until 1956, the demand for lubricants would be met by imports. The first step towards import substitution came about in June 1956, with the commissioning of Burmah Shell’s lubricant blending plant – the largest and most modern in the East – at Wadi-Bandar (known as Wadilube installation).

Equipped with a state-of-the-art Quality Control Lab and manned by specially trained personnel, the plant provided lubricants that met the highest quality standards.

Today, Wadilube delivers the entire range of lubricants and blends 349 different grades of lubricants in 841 SKUs.

On 27th September 1999, Bharat Petroleum launched the Petro Bonus Program. It is India's first pre-payment-cum-rewards scheme in the oil sector, implemented through an easy to use, state-of-the-art microprocessor based smart card technology.

In December 2000, Bharat Petroleum launched SmartFleet Card, a comprehensive fleet management loyalty programme, which catered to fleet owners, big transporters and corporates.

Today, SmartFLeet has crossed a turnover of Rs. 34,428 Crore with a customer base of over 2 lakh. It offers cash management, vehicle tracking and 24x7 customer relationship services to fleet operators.

Realizing the importance of a greater understanding of consumers' needs and consistent with its core objective of continuously adding value to its customers through innovative means, Bharat Petroleum launched its non-fuel retailing initiative, in February 2001, under the “In & Out Convenience Store" brand in its retail outlets.

Today we have “In & Out Convenience Store" spread across the country.

In March 2001, Bharat Petroleum launched another customer-focused initiative, which created a paradigm shift in highway fuel retailing across the country with One Stop Truck Shops (OSTSs), called ‘Ghar’ outlets.

The new Company Owned & Company Operated (COCO) outlets sell the company’s fuel products and offer a host of non-fuel facilities, like shopping, medical services, eateries, and much more.

Simply said, these outlets offer maximum comfort to truck drivers on their long and strenuous journey and our rightfully called ‘Ghar’ – home away from home.

In 2001, Bharat Petroleum realized that there was an enormous opportunity to earn the faith and belief of customers through a foolproof mechanism that would guarantee the delivery of right quantity of pure fuel to the customers.

To address this opportunity, on 12th August 2001, Bharat Petroleum launched a nation-wide campaign called ‘Pure for Sure (PFS)’ that would be a pioneering offer in Quality & Quantity assurance to customers in the Indian fuel retailing industry.

With a comprehensive digital solution that entails automated fuel dispensation system, integrated payment solutions, SMS updates and electronically locked tankers for fuel supplies, the Company benchmarked service standards in PFS fuelling stations.

All in all, PFS promise comes with the assurance of purity (guaranteed Q&Q), courteous service and efficient fuelling for customers .

Leading the branded fuel race, 'Speed', India’s first new generation petrol with multi-functional additives, effectively removing harmful deposits, resulting in enhanced overall engine performance, maximum power and acceleration, reduced emission, improved mileage and reduced maintenance costs, was launched on 9th July, 2002.
