Alternative Energy Resources

  • What are Alternative Energy Resources?

Alternative Energy Resources are mainly four - Wind, Sun, Tides and Biomass (plant matter). These are also known as renewable energy resources.

  • What is the significance of renewable energy resources?

Long term availability of crude oil, which is totally reliant on fossil oils, are likely to be gradually affected adversely with growing consumption. Although, the world is still very far from running out of fossil oils, the world will have to look for complementary supplies and viable alternatives with increase in demand in the long run. Over the past 100 years, world energy demand per capita income has increased from 3 to 13 barrels oil equivalent per year, spurred by economic growth. To meet energy demand, renewable energy resources will be required, not as replacement of coal / oil, but, as complement to those.

  • What is behind this dramatic change in scenario?

90% of the approximately 100 million people born each year are born in countries of developing world. Vast numbers of people in the developing countries have little or no access to the comfort provided by electricity. There is also hardly any choice and opportunity that come from mobility. Essential requisite of any economic development is availability of dependable source of energy. Although, in the next quarter century, fossil oils are expected to continue to meet lion's share of energy supply demand equation, in long run, demand for renewable energy is likely to exceed that for fossil oils.
